Structure of the crust and upper mantle beneath the Bransfield Strait (Antarctica) using P receiver functions

چکیده

The Bransfield Strait is a tectonically active back-arc rift basin located between the South Shetland archipelago (SSI) and Antarctic Peninsula (AP). We use teleseismic P-wave receiver functions from twelve seismic stations in order to improve current understanding of crustal upper mantle structure region. calculate thickness average Vp/Vs ratio crust, Mantle Transition Zone (MTZ) their spatial variability along study area. Our analysis reveals homogeneous AP, averaging 33.5 ± 1.2 km. VP/VS increases east west, with an 1.78 0.04 typical continental crust. In SSI results are highly heterogeneous. minimum observed Deception Island (~15 km), near axis, while crust thickens towards edges ~30 High ratios (>1.95) correlate shallow Moho may be linked presence melts accordance volcanism detected underplating layer Phoenix slab beneath SSI. There evidence low velocity zone (LVZ) wedge under also suggesting there widespread partial melting mantle. infer that dips steeply, as we observe thickened MTZ AP.

seismic study of upper mantle beneath the nw iran using p receiver function

rf method is now a well-known tool for studying crustal and upper mantle structure when such a complete data set is available. we compute p receiver functions to investigate the upper mantle discontinuity beneath the northwest of iran. we selected data from teleseismic events (mb ? 5.5, 30 ?>? > 95?) recorded from 1995 to 2008 at 8 three component short period stations from tabriz telemetry sei...

Crust and upper mantle discontinuity structure beneath eastern North America

[1] Crust and mantle discontinuities across the eastern margin of the North American craton were imaged using P to S converted phase receiver functions recorded by the Missouri to Massachusetts Broadband Seismometer Experiment. Crustal structure constrained by modeling Moho conversions and reverberations shows a variation of Moho depth from a minimum of 30 km near the Atlantic coast to depths o...

Crust and upper mantle of Kamchatka from teleseismic receiver functions

Teleseismic receiver functions (RFs) from a yearlong broadband seismological experiment in Kamchatka reveal regional variations in the Moho, anisotropy in the supra-slab mantle wedge, and, along the eastern coast, Ps converted phases from the steeply dipping slab. We analyze both radialand transverse-component RFs in bin-averaged epicentral and backazimuthal sweeps, in order to detect Ps moveou...

Adjoint tomography of the crust and upper mantle structure beneath the Kanto region using broadband seismograms

A three-dimensional seismic wave speed model in the Kanto region of Japan was developed using adjoint tomography for application in the effective reproduction of observed waveforms. Starting with a model based on previous travel time tomographic results, we inverted the waveforms obtained at seismic broadband stations from 140 local earthquakes in the Kanto region to obtain the Pand S-wave spee...

Imaging the seismic structure of the crust and upper mantle beneath the Great Plains, Rio Grande Rift, and Colorado Plateau using receiver functions

[1] The seismic structure of the crust and upper mantle of the southwestern United States is examined using receiver functions calculated from teleseismic arrivals recorded in the Colorado Plateau–Rio Grande Rift–Great Plains Seismic Transect (LA RISTRA) experiment. We apply receiver function estimation and filtering methods developed by Wilson and Aster (2005) to produce receiver functions wit...
